Description
The Chief is the responsible administrator and oversees all aspects of the police department. The appointee in this position performs a variety of complex public safety work in the performance and administration of the police department. The Chief of Police duties may include patrol activities, investigations, traffic regulations, crime prevention, public relations and education, fielding public complaints on officers, disciplining Police Department employees, and other law enforcement related functions.
Required Education and/or Experience
a) Graduate of an accredited high school or GED equivalent.
b) Satisfactory completion of the basic law enforcement training academy or equivalent.
c) Must not have had any felony convictions.
d) Possess a minimum of 10 years of experience in law enforcement.
e) Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; considerable knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
f) Possess the knowledge and have the ability to administer written and oral instructions in relation to procedure of the Dillon Police Department and Montana Code Annotated and to communicate respectfully this information to the public and media.
g) Possess supervisory certification from a course approved by the Montana Police Officers Standards and Training (POST).
h) Ability to train and supervise subordinate personnel; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors; ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; ability to give verbal and written instructions.
i) Must be able to operate a police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required, law enforcement equipment, personal computer including word processing software.
j) Preference will be given to applicants that have been honorably discharged from a military branch of the United States Government. A DD214 could be required for the preference.
k) Must establish and maintain residence within a reasonable response time to the City of Dillon.
