City of Dillon — Solicitation of Applicants for Appointment as Mayor

The City of Dillon City Council is now accepting applications from qualified individuals interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy in the Office of Mayor created by the resignation of Mayor McGinley. Applications will be accepted until February 27th, 2026 at noon. Late submittals WILL NOT be accepted.

By law and City Charter requirements, the City Council must appoint a qualified person to the office of Mayor within the timeframe established under Montana law to serve as Mayor until a successor is elected and qualified in the 2027 general election.

About the Role

The Mayor serves as the chief executive officer of the City of Dillon. The duties and responsibilities of the Mayor are defined by the Dillon City Charter and applicable Montana law. As the head of the executive branch of city government, the Mayor:

  • Leads and administers the day-to-day operations of the City;

  • Represents the City at official functions and in interactions with citizens, community partners, county, state, and federal agencies;

  • Presides at City Council meetings (as provided for in the Charter);

  • Executes policy and oversees the implementation of City ordinances and resolutions;

  • Works closely with City staff to advance city priorities;

  • Performs other duties as prescribed by ordinance, City Charter, or state law.

Eligibility & Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for appointment as Mayor, applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications (per Montana Code Annotated 7-4-4301):

  • Be registered to vote in the State of Montana;

  • Be a resident within the corporate limits of the City of Dillon;

  • Have been a resident of Montana for at least three (3) years;

  • Have been a resident of Dillon for at least two (2) years preceding the appointment;

  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment;

  • Not be prohibited from serving by any law or City Charter provision.

Term of Service

The appointee will serve until a successor is elected and qualified in the next regular municipal election as required by law and the City Charter. The next regular municipal election is in November of 2027.

Compensation

Compensation is established by City Council action. Benefits and salary details will be provided to applicants upon request.

  1. Letter of Interest explaining why you want to serve as Mayor and how your skills and experience qualify you for the role;

  2. Resume or Professional Summary outlining relevant education, experience, and community involvement;

  3. Any other supporting materials you wish the City Council to consider.

Selection Process

  • Applications will be circulated to the Dillon City Council;

  • Applicants may be invited to participate in an interview with City Council at a public meeting to be held March 4th, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.;

  • The City Council will vote to appoint a qualified candidate to serve as Mayor at the March 4th, 2026 City Council meeting;

  • Appointment is subject to all applicable laws and City Charter provisions.
